The Sumiyoshi Shrine in the Kawahara area is said to have been established in 1081, when the spirit of Sumiyoshi Taisha was divided and enshrined.
The Minazuki Festival takes place on the last Saturday night of July at 6:00 PM. Featuring a procession of floats, the event is held by the parishioners’ villages.
Two types of music are performed: Dōchū-bayashi and Uchikomi-bayashi. Uchikomi-bayashi is music offered within the shrine grounds after the procession and is played on instruments such as shime-daiko, kotsuzumi (small hand drum), shamisen, kokyu, and shinobue (Japanese transverse bamboo flutes).
The competition of Uchikomi-bayashi is one of the highlights of the festival, taking place around 7:40 PM.
The scene of lifting the floats in time with the shout of “Yoi-yassé,while drums, flutes, and shamisen are played as they enter the shrine.
As darkness falls, the sight of lit lanterns is enchanting.
