Tambasasayama Historical Art Museum

The main building of the Tambasasayama Historical Art Museum was built in 1891 as the Sasayama District Court and was used for its original purpose until June 1981. In order to preserve it as an object for a long time, the exterior and the former courtroom were left as they were before, while the rest of the interior was renovated to suit the museum.

Sasayama region has been inhabited since the Jomon period, which dates back thousands of years.
In every period from Yayoi(3c.BCE-3c.CE) to Kofun(3c.-7c.CE), there were groups that boasted great power directly linked to the ruling power in the country, as can be seen from the presence of the magnificent Kumobe Kurumazuka tumulus. Sasayama has played a central role in the Tamba region throughout the ancient and medieval periods.

In the modern period, the castle town and the entire Taki County, current Sasayama City area, constituted an integrated region centered on Sasayama Castle built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, great shogun, in 1609, and prospered as the capital of Tamba. Sasayama region, with such a historical background, is still blessed with nature and a wonderful cultural heritage that has been preserved and passed down from generation to generation.

In the main building, you will find weapons, lacquerware, paintings, and other works of art handed down in the castle town of Tambasasayama, as well as numerous masterpieces of Ojiyama ware, one of the best porcelain
kilns opened as the Sasayama domain kiln at the end of the Edo period, as well as ancient works. The museum collects and exhibits buried cultural properties that tell the story of the culture of this region. We would appreciate it if you could see them together with the precious Meiji era architecture.
